Trump Administration Sues Harvard Over Alleged Discrimination Against Jewish Students

The Trump administration has initiated another lawsuit against Harvard University, claiming it discriminates against Jewish students, following a previous legal loss. The new lawsuit, filed on Friday, asserts that the Ivy League institution failed to uphold its protest policies, which allegedly allowed Jewish students to face harassment, physical assaults, stalking, and spitting during pro-Palestinian protests that occurred amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Harvard had, in a previous legal battle, regained over $2 billion in federal funding that the Trump administration had removed due to allegations concerning anti-Semitism and racism. The fresh lawsuit accuses Harvard of being “deliberately indifferent” to anti-Semitic incidents on campus. It claims the university neglected to discipline students who occupied buildings during protests and ignored the enforcement of campus regulations.

The administration is seeking a court order to compel Harvard to refund all federal funding received during the period when they allowed alleged anti-Semitic activities to continue. Additionally, they want the university to implement a content-neutral protest policy and to discipline students who breach university rules.

A university representative stated that Harvard is committed to fostering a respectful environment for Jewish and Israeli community members, emphasizing that actions taken reflect this commitment. They also noted that Harvard has been actively working against anti-Semitism through training and programs aimed at promoting respectful discussion, both in and out of the classroom.

In response, Harvard’s spokesperson articulated that the university’s efforts prove they are not indifferent and that they will continue to contest the lawsuit. The spokesperson described the lawsuit as a reaction from an administration that seems unwilling to relinquish control of the university.

Previously, a federal judge had ruled against the Trump administration’s efforts, indicating that Harvard was already taking steps to address anti-Semitism and that the administration was infringing upon the university’s free speech rights. In April, Harvard’s president acknowledged the issue, apologizing to the community for the university’s handling of anti-Semitism, after an independent task force reported that over a quarter of Jewish students felt unsafe on campus, while nearly 60 percent had experienced discrimination or negative prejudices.

Now, the Trump administration insists that Harvard should be declared ineligible for federal funding due to non-compliance with civil rights laws.
