Trump and Xi Discuss U.S.-China Relations at State Banquet

President Donald Trump continued his visit to Beijing with a state banquet where he and President Xi Jinping spoke about the intertwined history and mutual interests of the United States and China.

During the gala dinner, which followed discussions on economic collaboration and ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts, both leaders took turns giving speeches, pausing for translation as needed.

Xi started by acknowledging the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, reflecting on how diplomatic relations were restored thanks to Richard Nixon’s efforts. He praised the ongoing dialogue with Trump, stating that their interactions have generally kept relations stable.

“We both believe that the China-U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world,” Xi shared, as translated for the audience.

He added, “Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals.”

Furthermore, Xi emphasized that the U.S.-China relationship impacts not only their citizens but the entire globe.

As he concluded his address, Xi raised a toast to the shared prosperity and friendship of both nations, wishing good health to Trump and the guests.

Trump characterized earlier talks as “positive and productive” during his remarks, conveying that the banquet offered a valuable chance for continued discussions.

The U.S. president highlighted the deep roots of U.S.-China relations, going back to 1784 when the first American envoy arrived in China.

“Two-and-a-half centuries later, that first connection has grown into one of the most consequential relationships in world history,” Trump remarked.

He acknowledged the contributions of both peoples, mentioning the role of Chinese laborers in building American railroads and the sharing of modern medicine and education between nations. He noted the significance of Tsinghua University, which Xi attended, mentioning that President Theodore Roosevelt had supported its founding.

Trump also acknowledged cultural exchanges, pointing out that Chinese restaurants in the U.S. outnumber the five largest fast-food chains combined. He mentioned the affection for basketball and blue jeans in China, which are typical American symbols.

“The American and Chinese people share much in common,” Trump said. “We value hard work; we value courage and achievement; we love our families; and we love our countries.”

By emphasizing these shared values, he suggested that both nations have a significant opportunity for a future defined by prosperity, cooperation, and peace.

In a diplomatic gesture, Trump invited Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan to visit the White House on September 24.

“I would now like to raise a glass and propose a toast to the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people. It’s a very special relationship,” Trump expressed, thanking Xi for the state visit.
