Trump and Meloni Clash Over Iran Support

Tensions have intensified between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following a phone interview where Trump accused her of lacking “courage” and not backing the U.S. stance on Iran.

In the conversation with Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Trump labeled Meloni’s position as “unacceptable” and expressed his “shock” regarding her comments. This confrontation escalated after Meloni criticized Trump’s remarks about Pope Leo XIV, which she deemed “unacceptable.”

Trump further criticized the Vatican’s call for peace in the Middle East, denouncing Pope Leo XIV as “soft on crime” and suggested he should focus on his papal duties rather than political issues. This statement quickly gained traction online, with many interpreting it as a rebuke of the first American pope for not taking a hardline stance.

Continued Criticism from Trump

In the same interview, Trump reiterated his views on the pope’s understanding of Iran, claiming he has “no idea what’s going on” and doesn’t grasp the gravity of the situation.

“I’m shocked by Meloni,” Trump stated, suggesting she relies on the U.S. for support but fails to reciprocate. He pointed out that Italy depends on Trump to keep energy routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, secure.

This marks a notable shift in Trump’s perspective on Meloni, who was previously viewed as an ally, especially after attending his inauguration earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Meloni’s office has not yet responded to these accusations, although public sentiment appears to be shifting as she receives pressure domestically in light of the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Military Agreements in Question

On Tuesday, Meloni announced that Italy would suspend the automatic renewal of its defense agreement with Israel, indicating a significant reevaluation of their diplomatic ties. “Given the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel,” she stated, which comes after recent tensions that included warning shots from Israel near Italian forces in southern Lebanon.

Israeli officials downplayed the suspension, remarking that the agreement was largely symbolic and without major implications. However, in Israel, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government, stating that this decision reflects poorly on leadership.

Meloni’s Changing Stance

With the impact of the ongoing war being felt economically, the political landscape in Italy is shifting. Meloni’s allies, however, defended her, emphasizing the importance of loyalty and respect in international alliances.

The current tensions illustrate the complex balance leaders like Meloni must maintain between their strategic alliances and the realities they face domestically, especially in light of the U.S.-led conflict in Iran.
