Former President Trump’s lawyer, Alina Haba, is going after the judge in the New York defamation case that ruled against the former president last month, saying the judge was politically biased and had no choice but to sway the jury. She claimed to have prejudiced her client.
“It was like being in an epic ‘Twilight Zone’ where there were no rules other than the one on the other side,” Haba said. Tuesday’s Newsmax interview.
A jury ruled last month that President Trump defamed author E. Jean Carroll by making comments related to her sexual assault allegations, including repeated denials. The case had been paused since she came forward in 2019, while the former president was in the White House. She was ordered to pay the former columnist $83.3 million.
He had previously been accused of sexual assault and ordered to pay $5 million in a separate defamation suit.
Hubba claimed that Carroll just wanted money.
“[Carroll] I’m going to go there and smile, so I’m going to buy France and a wardrobe and a bike,” she said. “Listen, I want everyone to remember, as I said in my closing argument to the jury, she came to pick up the check.”
“And she will continue after this,” Haba added. “She didn’t care about her defamation. She only cared about her public reputation.”
The lawyers also argued that the judge dismissed notable evidence in the case and prevented the jury from reaching a fair opinion, adding that the jury may be suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome.” .
“Unfortunately, when you block jurors from seeing the video footage and tweets that prove our case, when you block us from having experts, they don’t give us experts. You can… it’s very clear,” she said. “Then the jury will believe whatever the judge leads them to believe.”
Mr. Haba has vowed to appeal the ruling and said he is confident Mr. Trump will win.
