Trump leads Harris by 1 point: new national poll

A new poll shows former President Donald Trump has a one-point lead nationally over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

of Fox News PollThe latest poll, released Wednesday, showed the former commander in chief leading the vice president 50% to 49% in a head-to-head matchup.

The findings were consistent with a July Fox News poll, which also showed Trump, 78, leading Harris, 59, by one point.

When third-party candidates are included, Trump and Harris are tied at 45% each.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. received 6% support in the expanded poll, down from a high of 15% in November 2023 and 10% in July.

Among voters who would support Trump in a binary election (9%), more would support Kennedy if given the choice than would support Harris (7%).

The poll found that Democrats (94%) slightly favor Harris over Republicans (93%) who support Trump, but independents support the former president eight points more than the vice president.

Trump also maintains more support from his 2020 supporters (95%) than Harris does from Biden’s 2020 supporters (93%).

A majority of voters view both candidates unfavorably, with 51% viewing Harris unfavorably and 53% viewing Trump unfavorably — the highest ratings in more than four years.

Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, was viewed more favorably than Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, according to the poll.

Walz, who has faced criticism for allegations that he exaggerated his military record, is viewed favorably by 41% and unfavorably by 39%, while Vance’s ratings are 13 points lower (38% favorable and 51% unfavorably).

Heading into November, a majority of voters cited the economy as their top issue (38%), followed by immigration and abortion at 14% each.

Trump was trusted by a 6-point margin to deliver economic policy as president more than Harris, but polls point out that the Republican nominee led Biden by double digits on economic policy before dropping out of the race last month.

While Trump holds a slight lead nationally, Harris appears to have the advantage in key battleground states that could determine the election outcome.

A Cook Political Report poll released Wednesday found the vice president either tied with Trump or leading in all but one battleground state.

On average, Harris is leading Trump 48% to 47% in the top seven battleground states, with a tie in Georgia and a lead in all but Nevada, where the former president barely held an advantage.
