Trump Led a 'Censorship and Control' Effort Against the Media

FCC Commissioner Critiques Trump Administration’s Media Control

During a segment on MSNBC’s “Chris Jansing Reports” on Friday, FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez voiced her concerns about what she described as President Donald Trump’s campaign against media freedom, labeling it a “censorship and control campaign.”

Key points from the discussion:

Gomez expressed her discomfort with the administration’s actions, stating, “I’m uneasy about this administration’s censorship and control campaign. We’ve witnessed this in various forms. The FCC’s regulations appear to be manipulated to intimidate and influence the content produced by news organizations. In this case, the administration has imposed conditions that are unprecedented, effectively controlling editorial decisions, which is troubling. Our First Amendment guards against government interference with press freedom, which is a direct infringement on our essential liberties.”

Jansing responded by mentioning the apparent pressure tactics used by the Trump administration, questioning if Gomez had felt this pressure personally. “The Trump administration has executed numerous pressure campaigns quite overtly, including on tariffs with other countries,” she noted.

In response, Gomez remarked, “What I observed was indeed concerning; it felt like a clandestine arrangement. While companies were engaging with the FCC, there was a lack of transparency, preventing the public from understanding the negotiations. This is why I’m glad I was able to bring this deal before the full committee for a vote.”

Jansing also pointed out Gomez’s previous warnings that the American public would be the ones suffering the consequences, asking how this situation impacts the everyday citizen and whether they might be unaware of it.

Gomez reiterated her concerns about the administration’s control over media narratives, stating, “In this censorship campaign, the goal is to only allow news media to report in a favorable manner according to their preferences. They have little interest in genuine media oversight that can critique the government without bias. The result is a suppression of the rigorous journalism we should expect, replaced by a compliant media that risks repercussions if it deviates from the administration’s desired narrative.”
