The Trump administration is tightening its immigration policy following a shooting near the White House that resulted in the death of a National Guard member and injuries to another. The White House indicated plans to enhance operations aimed at drug smugglers in the Caribbean, building on previous airstrikes against vessels believed to be transporting drugs to the U.S.

In response to the incident, the administration is looking to restrict migrants trying to enter the U.S. The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Rakanwar from Afghanistan, legally entered the country in 2021 under the Biden administration’s program meant to assist Afghan refugees.
U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, age 20, succumbed to her injuries from the shooting, while Andrew Wolf remains in critical condition, according to the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s office. President Trump announced on social media that he intends to stop immigration from “all third world countries.” Meanwhile, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Secretary Joseph Edlow is conducting a thorough review of green cards for individuals from various nations deemed concerning.
The White House has yet to specify which countries will be impacted by these measures, only pointing back to Trump’s posts for guidance.
Operation Venezuela
Moreover, Trump has expressed intent to escalate ground operations against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean. His administration has conducted over 20 airstrikes since September to combat drug smuggling into the U.S.
Trump mentioned, “People don’t want to deliver by sea anymore. They’re likely to shift to land, which is easier.” The administration has moved the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford to U.S. Southern Command as part of this strategy, while Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has criticized Trump for allegedly “fabricating a new forever war.”
As of now, the White House has not clarified whether it is contemplating ground troop deployments in Venezuela. Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that Trump recently met with Maduro.
