Former President Trump met with independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday morning ahead of the Republican National Convention.
Kennedy confirmed the meeting in a statement Monday afternoon. Politico reports The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss possible support for Trump.
“There have been a lot of rumors circulating about a meeting with President Trump this morning,” Kennedy said. Posted on social platform X“Our main agenda is national unity and we would like to meet with the Democratic leadership on that point as well.”
“No, I’m not withdrawing from the election,” Kennedy continued.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for response.
Kennedy’s endorsement could be the little boost both candidates need to make a difference in what is a very close race.
The Hill/Decision Desk national average gives Kennedy an approval rating of 8 percent, behind Trump’s 42 percent and Biden’s 40 percent.
Biden directed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas early Monday to work with the U.S. Secret Service to provide security for Kennedy, a privilege the independent candidate has long sought. Kennedy thanked Biden in a statement. Allow the request.
The announcement comes in the wake of the attempted assassination of President Trump over the weekend that shocked the nation and renewed calls for Kennedy to be given secret service protection – a request he said was denied last year.
That same day, President Trump joined calls for Kennedy to be given secret service protection.
