Trump meets with Syrian president and removes all sanctions in significant policy change.

Trump Meets Syrian President in Riyadh

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump met with Syrian interim president Ahmad Alshara in Riyadh. This meeting marks a notable shift in the U.S. approach towards Syria, especially regarding the sanctions currently imposed on the country.

The last interaction between U.S. and Syrian leadership took place back in 2000 with former President Bill Clinton. This time, Trump’s meeting with Alsharaa was part of a four-day tour in the region, and it was meant to be somewhat informal, involving discussions at the Gulf Cooperation Council.

During the summit, Trump mentioned that this is a crucial step towards fostering peace and restructuring relations with the Syrian government. He emphasized, “We are currently exploring normalizing relations with the new Syrian government.” After discussing matters with Crown Prince Mohammed, Trump expressed optimism about the potential for future collaboration.

“I’ve ordered a halt to sanctions against Syria, giving them a fresh start,” he stated, indicating that the previous measures had been quite crippling for the nation. The announcement was met with celebratory reactions from Syrians, who appeared elated about the potential lifting of sanctions.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry echoed these sentiments, labeling this moment as a significant turning point for the country as it transitions away from the destructive impacts of war.

Trump also reiterated his belief in the possibility of a positive transformation for Syria. “I feel strongly that this gives them a chance for a new beginning,” he said, expressing pride in taking this step. He noted that creating a path forward was not going to be simple, but he sees it as an essential opportunity.

Looking ahead, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to engage with Syrian officials later in the week, further solidifying this evolving diplomatic relationship.
