Trump must make a fresh start for the GOP to succeed in the 2026 midterms.

President Trump seems to disagree with the famous poet T.S. Eliot. He believes that the harshest month isn’t April—it’s November.

As he nears the end of his first year in office, the president is struggling with low approval ratings and a slew of challenges, many of which he seems to have brought upon himself.

Even usually compliant Republicans in Congress are starting to feel uneasy. His suggestions to manipulate congressional district lines in red states to strengthen Republican chances in midterm elections might, paradoxically, backfire.

This growing turmoil reflects Trump’s overwhelming confidence, ambitious vision, and an almost frenetic management style.

It’s like there are too many things competing for his attention every day, which is likely causing some of the current chaos.

Tighten the focus

Overall, it appears he might need a reset and possibly some rest.

It’s probably time to adopt a more focused and systematic strategy to ensure that the most important issues receive the president’s full attention.

It’s hard to ignore that Trump’s scattered focus might be the core of what should be concerning for the White House. Despite his challenges, he still has support from voters, according to various polls this month.

For instance, Real Clear Politics shows his average approval sits at 43%, while disapproval is at 54.8%, resulting in a notable gap of -11.8 points.

Worryingly, his ratings regarding economic handling are even worse. The economy was a pivotal issue during his 2024 success over Vice President Kamala Harris in key battlegrounds.

Currently, though, Trump’s average approval for economic management is just 39.5%, with a disapproval rate of 57.8%, quite a disparity of -18.3.

His recent talk about $2,000 duty rebate checks gives off a vibe of desperation, bringing to mind the controversial “Obama phone call.”

Three recent situations illustrate the depth of Trump’s struggles. He promoted a proposal to resolve the Ukraine-Russia conflict as a hopeful sign but faced backlash from European leaders, who criticized it as a troubling concession to Russia.

Then Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated he was surprised by the terms of the proposal, pushing for adjustments favoring Ukraine even as he defended the initial plan as a “living, breathing document.”

Deadly opposition

Reports of pro-Ukrainian amendments to the proposal were initially encouraging, but they were quickly overshadowed by news of missiles raining down on Kiev, resulting in at least seven deaths.

Russian officials responded to the missile strikes by rejecting the acceptable changes to the deal, which seem to take negotiations back to square one.

During his pursuit of a second term, Trump famously claimed he could end the war in just 24 hours if re-elected. This isn’t to downplay his success as a peacemaker in other contexts, like between Israel and Hamas, but in this situation, his efforts have not borne fruit.

Instead, Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently undermined what appeared to be improving relations.

Recently, Trump reverted to an old narrative, stating on Truth Social that Ukrainian leaders show “zero gratitude.”

This comment recalls an earlier conflict, where he made waves by uninviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy from the White House, even though their relationship seemed to be on the mend.

Demanding appreciation when Russia is targeting civilians in Ukraine during sensitive negotiations, Trump appears to come off as unreasonably harsh.

His critics found joy in the further setbacks he experienced.

A decision by a federal judge to dismiss charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James drew applause from those opposing Trump.

As reported, this ruling represented a significant blow to Trump’s efforts to hold his political rivals accountable. However, it’s important to note that the ruling mainly addressed the specifics of how charges were brought, rather than the legitimacy of the accusations themselves.

While the government plans to revisit the accusations, the ruling raised issues about procedural errors rather than the merits of the case.

Unfortunately for Trump, this legal mess stems partly from the actions of his former lawyer, who maneuvered through a complicated process to pursue charges against Comey and James.

In many ways, this particular ruling highlights the political motivations behind legal actions against him, which many perceive as politically driven.

While those investigations were initiated largely due to Trump’s Republican stance, it’s likely only a concern when he potentially abuses his power to retaliate against those who might have crossed boundaries themselves.

James faces charges related to mortgage fraud while Comey has been accused of misleading Congress in 2020.

Confidential information

The controversy also involves leaks of classified information, with several reports indicating connections to major media outlets.

This means certain news organizations have a stake in the narrative and their support may be more political than principled.

I can somewhat understand Trump’s reasoning for pursuing legal action against biased media.

It’s not surprising that he would also retaliate against Comey and James, who used the legal system to challenge him while disregarding traditional norms.

However, they need to resolve these issues with care before diving deeper into complicated legal waters.
