Trump names Saudi Arabia as a key non-NATO ally in recent defense agreement

U.S. Designates Saudi Arabia as Major Non-NATO Ally

President Donald Trump shared on Tuesday that the United States will officially recognize Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally, marking a new phase in defense and economic relations during a White House dinner celebrating 80 years of partnership.

Welcoming guests, President Trump expressed gratitude to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his visit and his investments in the U.S. The Crown Prince responded with a short speech, acknowledging Trump and expressing hope for the future of U.S.-Saudi relations.

Prior to the announcement, Trump reflected on the historical ties between the two nations, particularly recalling a 1945 meeting between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and King Abdulaziz.

“It’s a privilege to welcome His Royal Highness to Washington this year, celebrating 80 years since our first meeting,” Trump noted, highlighting the friendship that developed between the leaders.

Saudi Arabia has long been America’s largest buyer of arms, and Trump aims to include F-35s in their military purchases.

He emphasized that the partnership is “stronger than ever,” and after discussions with bin Salman, he referred to new agreements in energy, minerals, and artificial intelligence as “unprecedented.” The Crown Prince’s commitment to raise investments from $600 billion to a staggering $1 trillion was a significant point, which Trump believes will enhance job creation in the U.S. and fortify their alliance.

Trump proudly announced the strategic defense agreement, referring to it as a foundational step towards mutual security and peace. He also indicated that Saudi Arabia will increase its U.S. investments, doubling its previous pledges.

“We’re enhancing military cooperation by designating Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally, which is very crucial for them,” Trump said. He expressed confidence that the new defense deal would bolster the safety of both nations, citing recent military actions. “Saudi Arabia has never been safer,” he remarked, alluding to a reduction in regional threats.

Following the announcement, Trump linked the defense agreement to a wider Middle East peace initiative, mentioning recent efforts to end conflict in Gaza and support from the United Nations for his peace commission.

Crown Prince Bin Salman conveyed his gratitude for the warm reception and emphasized the remarkable economic prospects stemming from their collaboration. He views this moment as vital and expressed determination to explore further opportunities.

In conclusion, Trump asserted that this alliance represents a pivotal moment in U.S.-Saudi relations, invoking the legacy of Roosevelt and King Abdulaziz. “Perhaps one day, our friendship will be celebrated as a landmark in history,” he contemplated.
