President-elect Donald Trump nominated Pam Bondi to be attorney general after former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) resigned amid an ethics investigation into sexual misconduct.
President Trump announced Bondi's selection Thursday in a social media post.
“For too long, a partisan Justice Department has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans, and that will no longer be the case,” Trump said. “Pam will refocus the Department of Justice on its original purpose: fighting crime and making America safe again.”
As pointed out by Associated PressBondi has positioned himself as a strong defender of the president-elect's policies and harshly criticized the criminal case against him during the campaign.
“She is also a vocal critic of the criminal case against Trump, as well as special counsel Jack Smith, who prosecuted him in two federal cases,” the paper said. “In one radio appearance, she accused Smith and the other prosecutors who prosecuted Trump of being 'horrible' people and made a name for herself by 'going after Donald Trump and weaponizing our legal system.' He said he was trying to sell it.
As Breitbart News reported on Thursday, Gaetz announced his resignation because he believed past ethics investigations had gotten in the way of President Trump's policies.
“I had a great meeting with my senators yesterday,” Gates said in a post on X. “We are grateful for their thoughtful feedback and the incredible support of so many people.”
“While momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation unfairly impeded the important work of the Trump-Vance transition. There is no time to waste on unnecessarily prolonged Washington brawls, so I “I am withdrawing my name from the list of candidates for attorney general,” he continued.
President Trump thanked Gaetz for his accomplishments and wished him luck in his future endeavors.
