Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Wednesday on CNN's “The Read” that President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) for attorney general is “an “This is an emergency for our democracy.”
“Right before this news broke, I was walking out of the Senate chamber and my jaw literally dropped to the floor of Republican senators standing up to Donald Trump in a way I never wanted to before,” Murphy said. You can hear it.”
He continued, “Matt Gaetz is dangerously unqualified. That's not the worst thing about it. Mr. Gaetz has been Mr. Trump's chief defender when it comes to President Trump's attack on democracy. He is trying to overthrow the government on the 6th, and he is openly advocating for the abolishment of law enforcement when it does not align with conservative political priorities. This is extremely dangerous to American democracy. It's going to be a great moment. Matt Gaetz was nominated for one reason: He's going to persecute and prosecute Trump's political opponents from Donald Trump's Justice Department, the agency that represents us all. “We will implement a transition to an agency that is simply an arm of the White House.”
Murphy added: “This is a surprising announcement in some ways, but not in others. Trump intends to use the White House to go after his political opponents during the campaign. “This selection of Justice Department secretary appears to be very much in line with Trump's campaign promises.”
