Trump obtains freedom for American citizen imprisoned by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Trump administration announced on Sunday the release of American Amir Amir, who had been unlawfully held by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Officials from the Trump administration stated that Qatar, along with the State Department’s Bureau for Hostage Affairs and the National Security Council’s Counterterrorism Bureau, played significant roles in facilitating Amir’s release.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted, “This is an important step, but there are still more Americans who remain unjustly detained in Afghanistan. President Trump is committed to bringing all of our citizens back home.”

Rubio, who serves as Trump’s national security adviser, described the release as a key development for the Kabul administration and indicated it could help in securing the freedom of other detained Americans.

Amir was reportedly taken into custody in December 2024, though specific details about his detention have not been readily available.

This release marks a significant moment of diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and the Taliban, particularly following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021 during the U.S. withdrawal under the Biden administration.

Information about what the U.S. may have offered in return for Amir’s freedom remains unclear. Historically, some governments have exchanged American citizens for humanitarian considerations or aid. Both the Biden and Trump administrations have navigated prisoner swaps to secure the release of detained citizens.

CNN has reported that at least three Americans are currently detained in Afghanistan, with some being deceased.

One such case involves Paul Overby, whose status was reported as deceased by CNN.

Ahmad Habibi, the brother of Mahmoud Habibi—a U.S. citizen held by the Taliban for over three years—expressed gratitude upon hearing the news of Amir’s release and hopes for Mahmoud’s safe return as well.

Mahmoud Habibi, an Afghan-American businessman, worked with a telecommunications contractor in Kabul and went missing in 2022. Both the FBI and his family suspect he was captured by the Taliban, who have denied holding him.

Ahmad Habibi conveyed his appreciation for the assurances he received from senior officials at the State Department and the National Security Council that their negotiations with the Taliban were focused on ensuring no American would be left behind.

President Trump has made the return of Americans abroad a priority, recently signing an executive order aimed at increasing pressure on governments that detain Americans unfairly, labeling such practices as national sponsorship of illegal detention.
