Trump Organization fails to regain control of Wollman Rink

Sources indicate that President Trump’s real estate company has been granted the opportunity to take control of the Wollman Ice Rink located in Central Park again.

The City Parks division has suggested awarding a new 20-year franchise to Wollman Park Partners, a collaboration that includes City Pickle LLC and other affiliates.

Back in the 1980s, Trump’s organization oversaw the renovation and management of Wollman Rink for several decades.

In a notable turn, former mayor Bill de Blasio made a significant move on January 6, 2021, amid backlash over the Capitol riots, which involved Trump supporters.

Despite this, the Trump organization recently submitted a proposal to reclaim the franchise.

The city’s Ministry of Research and the franchise and concessions review board will assess the franchise award.

“The Adams administration is committed to following the regulations established by New York City charters concerning concessions and awards. While we work through this process for Wollman Rink, we prioritize the interests of New Yorkers and the city’s Hall of Fame,” an official stated.

In the fall, the Parks department issued a call for proposals to manage the rink for 20 years, with the current agreement set to lapse on October 31, 2026.

The current group overseeing the rink includes Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, known for owning the New Jersey Devils hockey team, alongside other affiliates.

During the summer, the rink is also utilized for pickleball matches.

Team Trump insisted they shouldn’t be excluded from operating this iconic location.

The renovation of the Wollman Rink in the 1980s was a costly ordeal for then-mayor Ed Koch.

However, Trump stepped up in the summer of 1986, proposing to finish the project on a new budget and in time for the fall.

Ultimately, his contractor completed the project for less than $3 million, prompting even Koch to humorously quip about Trump’s reputation.

The reopening served as a significant public relations event for Trump, with his contract to manage the rink spanning over 30 years.

The Trump organization still highlights its connection to Wollman Rink on its website, describing it as one of Manhattan’s major successes.

Concerns have been raised that granting the Wollman contract to Trump could provoke objections from critics due to civil fraud allegations against his company. Nonetheless, city officials assert that these legal concerns will not influence the decision.

The Trump organization has yet to comment on the matter.
