Trump overrides and cancels DHS directive directing ICE to pause traffic stops temporarily.

Trump calls on ICE to keep performing traffic stops after sudden policy shift: ‘We must not abandon one of ICE’s key and effective crime-fighting strategies’

Trump Advocates for Resumption of ICE Traffic Stops

In a recent development, President Donald Trump has called on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to restart traffic stops, which had been largely paused. This directive comes after the agency suspended that practice in many situations. The White House confirmed that Trump’s direction voided a memo from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), reinstating the vehicle stops, according to reports.

During his comments, Trump expressed concern over the importance of traffic stops for ICE. “We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!” He added that stopping these actions would benefit criminals, stating, “The Radical Left Dumocrats would like to see this done, but it won’t happen on my watch.” Trump urged ICE agents to be “judicious, fair and smart” in carrying out their duties.

He also highlighted the successes of his administration’s immigration strategies, taking a jab at former President Joe Biden’s policies. Trump claimed, “CRIME IS WAY DOWN IN AMERICA,” pointing to statistics not seen for decades. He alleged that Biden’s open border approach allowed millions to enter the country unchecked, which he argued included criminals.

Trump’s remarks followed news that the DHS paused traffic stops to provide extra training after two fatal incidents involving agents in Texas and Maine. Under the current directive, stops are limited to high-risk scenarios involving serious violent felony warrants or cooperative operations with other law enforcement.

One incident in Texas involved an ICE officer fearing for their life during a vehicle stop when an illegal alien attempted to flee by running over officers, leading to the officer firing their weapon. In another case, a driver was killed in Maine while attempting to evade arrest, prompting an ICE officer to fire their weapon in the name of public safety. The FBI is now involved in investigating that case.

Reports suggest that Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin was pivotal in determining the pause on traffic stops. It has been noted that he received pressure from Maine’s congressional delegation, particularly from Senator Susan Collins, who urged him to halt non-urgent vehicle stops following the fatal shooting in Biddeford.

Despite this reasoning, conservatives have criticized Mullin for his decision, claiming it reflects weakness and allows criminals to benefit. Commentators and GOP lawmakers echoed Trump’s assertion that suspending traffic stops is detrimental to public safety.

While Mullin asserted his support for deportation efforts, he refrained from confirming whether ICE officers could resume traffic stops immediately.
