Trump Talks About Village People Hit After Co-founder’s Death

President Donald Trump recently commented on a rally where the song “YMCA” was prominently featured, following the passing of one of its creators.

He noted that the song saw a resurgence after he began using it during his 2020 presidential campaign. “There’s nothing gay about it,” he asserted, addressing the song’s often-discussed themes.

The connection between “YMCA” and Trump’s rallies became well-known, particularly during campaign suspensions and anti-lockdown protests where attendees showcased distinctive dances to the tune.

Sadly, the day before, Victor Willis, co-founder of the Village People and a Texas native, passed away just a few days before his 75th birthday. His wife, Karen Hough-Willis, shared the news on her blog, mentioning the loss was due to a “short but aggressive illness” and asked for privacy during this time.

Trump offered his condolences via Truth Social, saying, “He was a wonderful, happy man and was happy for me to use his group’s song ‘YMCA’ at a rally.” He reflected on how the song’s popularity soared again, with many artists looking to engage with his campaign after record turnout at rallies. “Victor and the group were there for us from the beginning!” Trump added.

Willis had earlier mentioned the financial boost from the song’s revival, calling Trump’s support “amazing.” He stated that its use during Trump’s rallies generated millions of dollars in revenue, expressing gratitude for its continued use.

On that Wednesday, Trump noted the affection the attendees had for the Village People’s music and emphasized, “We loved them and their great, uplifting songs.” He concluded with heartfelt remarks, stating they would remember Willis whenever “YMCA” was played, especially during the celebrations of his own fourth birthday week in July. “Our condolences go out to his wonderful family and the group. Victor Willis will be greatly missed.”

Interestingly, while “YMCA” is often labeled a gay anthem, Willis denied this, clarifying it was about camaraderie among friends. He explained that the line, “You can hang out with everyone,” reflects cultural expressions from the 1970s, emphasizing, “There’s nothing gay about it.” The Village People’s albums, including “Macho Man,” “Cruisin’,” and “Go West,” have all achieved platinum status in the U.S.
