Trump pays tribute to the 'Miracle on Ice' Team USA hockey team

President Donald Trump recognized the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team during a signing ceremony at the Oval Office on Friday.

“It’s such an exciting moment. One of the unforgettable highlights in American sports,” Trump stated, with numerous team members present. “This was an incredible achievement. There have been other upsets out there, but honestly, I didn’t quite grasp the scale of what you guys did. It’s just fantastic.”

“Today, I am genuinely pleased to join this legendary group—the 1980 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team, a symbol of American sports history and national pride. Their victory was one of the greatest moments I have witnessed in sports,” he added.

Members of the team sported hats from the 1980 opening ceremony, with team captain Mike Eruzione presenting a replica to Trump as a token of appreciation.

“Words really don’t capture how grateful we are for what you’ve done for our team. This honor is just incredible,” Eruzione noted.

Goaltender Jim Craig thanked Trump for his “daily courage and efforts to make our country safer.”

Bill Baker expressed, “The pride we felt back in 1980 was extraordinary, and thanks to your leadership, we are starting to feel that pride once more.”

Another poignant moment came from a teammate recalling his late father, who had faith in American hockey and the team. “I wish he were here, but I’m proud to represent him today.”

Trump signed HR 452, which recognizes the team’s achievements with a Congressional Gold Medal. This squad, made up of amateur and college players, famously achieved a “miracle on ice” by defeating the Soviet Union, who were viewed as an international giant, during the 1980 Winter Olympics. This win led to a chance for gold, which they secured against Finland two days later.

The Soviet Union had previously dominated the U.S. in a pre-Olympic exhibition match held at Madison Square Garden. Surprisingly, in that game, they benched their star goaltender Vladislav Tretiak after conceding a last-minute goal in the first period.

As the final period opened, the U.S. led 3-2, but Mark Johnson leveled the score midway through. Eruzione then scored the decisive goal, marking a historic moment for American sports.

“Miracle on Ice” refers to the iconic commentary by Al Michaels, who famously asked, “Do you believe in miracles?” and emphatically answered himself with a “Yes!”
