Lake was originally born in Illinois, but is a former popular newscaster based in Arizona, most recently running for Arizona's U.S. Senate seat in the 2022 gubernatorial race against Democrat Katie Hobbs. He ran against Democrat Ruben Gallego.
President Trump announced his nomination of Lake, who he supported during his run for Arizona Senate last month and for governor in 2022, in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.
“I am pleased to announce that Kari Lake will be our next director. voice of america. She will be appointed by my soon-to-be-announced next Director of the U.S. Agency for Global Media to ensure that American values of liberty and liberty are broadcast fairly and accurately around the world, free from lies. We will be working closely together. Spread by the Fake News Media,” President Trump wrote.
“Kari is a beloved newscaster in Arizona who has supported me by record margins for over 20 years. Congratulations, Kari!” he added.
President Trump previously criticized VOA during his first term for its coverage of the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. He accused VOA of using U.S. taxpayer money “to represent a dictatorial regime.” President Trump's complaints center around the fact that VOA's reporting on coronavirus infections and deaths is based on misleading and distorted data and reports from the Chinese government, an adversary of the United States. I was doing it.
Meanwhile, Lake responded to President Trump's announcement on XPost, expressing her excitement about her new role.
“I am honored that President Trump has asked me to lead Voice of America. @VOANews promotes American interests by engaging directly with people around the world and promoting democracy and truth. “We are an important international media outlet dedicated to this,” Lake said.
“With 326 million viewers, Voice of America delivers information in 48 languages. Under my leadership, VOA will continue to maximize its mission to chronicle America's achievements around the world. Thank you, President Trump, for your confidence in me. I look forward to leading Voice of America and can't wait to get started.”
