Trump plans peace discussions with Russia and Ukraine following his return from the Middle East

Former President Donald Trump has come back from a four-day trip to the Middle East and is now turning his attention to the ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine, hoping to facilitate a potential ceasefire through phone calls.

After spending the weekend in Washington, D.C., following his visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, Trump returned home with several agreements in hand, including Qatar’s purchase of Boeing aircraft and various “strategic economic partnerships” in fields such as energy and defense with Saudi Arabia.

This week, much of the political focus is on Eastern Europe, particularly as Trump has planned calls with leaders from both Russia and Ukraine for Monday morning.

Conversations Regarding Peace

Over the weekend, Trump reportedly spoke privately with Russian President Vladimir Putin, indicating his willingness to mediate negotiations aimed at halting the violence and pursuing lasting peace. “I’ll be on the phone with Putin at 10 a.m. on Monday to discuss ending the violence that is leading to unnecessary loss of life,” Trump stated.

Following that, he connected with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, mentioning he would also coordinate a call with NATO leaders, indicating a jam-packed Monday ahead.

Just last week, Russian and Ukrainian officials engaged in their first direct peace talks in years in Istanbul, but so far, they haven’t managed to agree on a ceasefire despite a significant exchange of prisoners during those discussions.

Hours after these talks concluded, a Russian drone hit a passenger bus in northeast Ukraine on Saturday. Meanwhile, various world leaders, including Zelenskyy, traveled to Rome for Pope Leo XIV’s first Mass at the Vatican on Sunday, where they met to discuss ending the conflict.

In a public message, Zelenskyy criticized Russia for sending a “low-level” delegation to the Istanbul discussions, while thanking U.S. leaders for their support in efforts to save lives.

“We talked about negotiating strategies, emphasizing the need for a complete ceasefire and a genuine diplomatic approach,” Zelenskyy remarked, further stressing the necessity of sanctions and pressure on Russia until they show willingness to cease hostilities.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that conversations with the U.S. were set for Monday, expressing hope for a productive outcome and a potential ceasefire.

Impending Tariff Policy Changes

Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent mentioned that countries not adhering to negotiation agreements could face increased tariffs. “Trump has warned that failure to negotiate fairly could revert tariffs back to previous levels,” he remarked.

Earlier, Trump had announced suspension of tariffs for various countries, except China, in an effort to address the U.S. trade deficit. However, escalating consumer prices, particularly at Walmart, have sparked criticism from Trump, who urged the company not to pass on costs to customers.

Fiscal Reform Initiatives

Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans are striving to advance Trump’s proposed “big and beautiful bill,” viewed as essential for supporting his fiscal agenda. They are racing against time to push it through the budgetary process ahead of an approaching deadline.

This bill faced setbacks when members of the conservative Freedom Caucus opposed it last week. These conservatives are concerned about new regulations on Medicaid and are advocating for the removal of certain subsidies established during the Biden administration.
