Trump’s Legal Team Takes Issue with BBC Broadcast
Lawyers for US President Donald Trump have formally asked the BBC to retract a reported “false, defamatory, derogatory and inflammatory” speech it aired. If the broadcaster fails to act by Friday night, it may face a lawsuit demanding $1 billion in damages.
Revelations from leaked internal BBC documents indicate that executives were aware of ethical concerns regarding their coverage of Trump but seemed to do little to address them, even with mounting legal threats. The legal notice urges the BBC to issue a “full and fair retraction,” an immediate apology, and compensation, or else they will be pursued legally.
A documentary highlights that an internal memo at the BBC acknowledged the president’s actual words from January 6 were misrepresented, which has created significant confusion for viewers. The letter emphasizes the need for the speech to be retracted quickly.
According to Trump’s legal team, as reported by a British publication, the inaccurate portrayal of the speech has caused immense financial and reputational damage to Trump. They assert that the BBC’s negligence concerning the truth reflects malice in its decision to publish the remarks.
The letter requests a response by 5 PM ET (10 PM GMT) or Trump will assert his claims for damages exceeding $1 billion.
“The BBC is on notice,” the letter states.
This development comes on the heels of the resignations of director general Tim Davie and news chief executive Deborah Turnes amid a scandal focused on the edited footage, which misleadingly suggested Trump encouraged his supporters to storm the Capitol.
