Trump Plans to Increase Tariffs on India to 50 Percent Due to Russia Oil Purchases

Trump to Raise Tariffs on Indian Oil Imports

President Donald Trump is set to increase tariffs on Indian imports to 50% later this month in response to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil.

He has signed an executive order that adds an extra 25% tariff, supplementing the 25% tariff that was implemented on August 1. When he first announced this tariff, Trump pointed out that India was the largest buyer of Russian oil, stating that this was happening while the world sought to halt Russian aggression.

According to a White House Fact Sheet, Trump has confirmed that India is still importing Russian oil:

  • The president noted the continued importation of Russian federal oil by India. To address the national emergency linked to Russia’s actions against Ukraine, an additional 25% tariff will be applied on imports from India starting August 27, specifically addressing the importation of Russian oil.
    • This new tariff will be added on top of any existing fees, taxes, or claims related to these imports unless they fall under ongoing litigation as defined by the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
    • The additional 25% tariff will complement tariffs already established under an amended Executive Order from April 2, 2025, but it will not apply to items noted in the General Assembly under that order.

The new tariffs are set for implementation on August 27.

Key officials, such as Commerce Secretary Howard Rutnik, Treasury Secretary Scott Becent, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will evaluate if other countries are indirectly importing oil from Russia and determine if further actions are necessary.

As a strong advocate for ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Trump’s latest move seems to increase pressure on Russia by imposing tariffs on India, a key oil trading partner and ally of the United States.
