Trump to Meet Putin on U.S. Soil to Discuss Ukraine War

President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday to talk about ending the war in Ukraine. This significant meeting is set to take place in Alaska.

“The highly anticipated meeting between me as President of the United States and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held on Friday, August 15th, 2025 in the Great Province of Alaska.”

Moving forward, discussions between the two leaders will continue after Putin set a deadline of 10 to 12 days for a ceasefire in Ukraine, indicating he might impose “very serious tariffs” and sanctions if this isn’t met. It’s worth noting that this deadline appears to have lapsed as of August 8th.

European leaders are encouraging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in talks about the country’s future.

“It’s important to see how serious Putin is on Friday, and the only person who can do that is President Trump,” commented NATO executive director Mark Latte.

“It’s really key that the meeting takes place. This isn’t going to be the final step, but we need to initiate the next phase of this process and apply pressure on the Russians, as President Trump has done over the last six months,” Latte added.

Latte noted that President Trump played a pivotal role in re-establishing communication with Putin during the early days of his presidency. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of maintaining military support for Ukraine, regardless of the meeting’s outcome, to ensure Ukraine remains robustly positioned.

Despite not being officially invited, it is likely that Zelensky will meet with both Trump and Putin following the summit. White House officials indicated that Trump is open to a trilateral discussion but is also working to facilitate a bilateral meeting, as per Putin’s request.

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Oksana Markarova, has expressed hope that Putin will respond to the pressure of sanctions and ultimately cease his aggressions. She stated, “I want Putin to stop. We really hope that this push from the sanctions package will cause him to halt his invasion.”

“This is not a show of power that allows him to fly to the US, land here, and negotiate with the president,” Arizona Democratic Senator Mark Kelly remarked critically of the meeting, suggesting, “I hope I get something from now on.”

Last week, Trump mentioned that negotiations might touch upon a “territorial exchange,” though specifics remain vague. While Russia continues to argue that Ukraine’s path to peace hinges on its NATO aspirations, Ukrainian leaders maintain that true peace must include the possibility of NATO membership, which remains a contentious point.
