Trump praises Nebraska governor for support of ‘winner-take-all’ electoral system

Former President Trump on Tuesday praised Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen (R) for supporting a “winner-takes-all” system for the state’s electoral votes. Changing Nebraska’s vote count would bring it in line with most of the rest of the state and could help Mr. Trump win additional electoral votes this November.

President Trump said Tuesday: “Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen is a very smart and popular governor who has done some really great things, but today we are returning Nebraska’s electoral votes to a winner-take-all system. “We have published a very strong letter in support of this.”in real social posts.

“Most Nebraskans have wanted to go back to this system for a long time because it’s what the other 48 states are doing, it’s the founding intent, and it’s the right thing for Nebraska. ” he continued. “We thank the Governor for his bold leadership. Let’s hope the Senate does the right thing. Nebraskans, we humbly ask our senators to support this great bill.”

state legislator introduced Pillen on Tuesday approved a measure to implement a winner-take-all system in January 2023, moving it to the 2024 legislative session.

Pillen said the bill would “bring Nebraska in line with the other 48 states, better reflect our nation’s founding intent, and ensure our states have a unified voice in presidential elections.” “I call on Republicans in Congress to bring this bill to my desk and sign it into law.”

Only Nebraska and Maine allocate Electoral College votes by district. In most elections, Republicans win two of the state’s constituencies and Democrats win one, but three are close contests.

If the bill goes into effect for the 2024 election, President Biden could lose electoral votes. Former President Trump won about 58% of the vote in Nebraska in 2020, and Republican candidates will win all five of the state’s electors under a winner-take-all system.
