President Donald Trump said he prefers the original Washington Redskins name to the “Washington Commander,” a politically correct alternative.
Speaking with reporters Tuesday, conservative Virginia radio host John Fredericks asked the president if there was a warning that a deal to build a new Commander’s Stadium on federal land would require the team to maintain the original Redskins name. Trump had no news about the stadium, but he said he prefers Redskins to commanders.
“The Indian population is a large part of this country and it’s a great heritage,” Trump said before citing other Native American-themed teams, such as the Kansas City chief.
The president also had little gratitude for the Cleveland Indians changing their name to the Cleveland Guardians.
“I think it’s degraded to the Indian population, and it’s a great population,” Trump said. “And I like when they’re called by different names.
