Trump on Potential Attack Against Iran
President Donald Trump stated Thursday that he will make a decision regarding a possible military action against Iran within the next two weeks, as diplomatic talks surrounding the nation’s nuclear program continue.
This announcement coincided with Israel’s military efforts targeting Iran’s nuclear sites.
“There will be significant opportunities for negotiations that may or may not happen soon with Iran,” Trump noted.
He reiterated his firm stance against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons and criticized former President Joe Biden for allegedly facilitating a massive financial arrangement with Iran.
During a media briefing, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt conveyed a message from the president, responding to widespread speculation about potential U.S. involvement in Iran’s ongoing situation.
“Given this context, I have a direct message from the president,” she said while reading the statement.
It read, “Considering the substantial chances for potential negotiations that may or may not occur with Iran shortly, I will determine whether to proceed within the next two weeks.”
The timing of this announcement might have been an attempt to alleviate concerns following a report in the Wall Street Journal, indicating Trump had approved an attack on Iran but was awaiting a final decision to allow for negotiations.
“I have some ideas about what to do—although I tend to finalize my decisions, well, just before they’re made,” Trump remarked to reporters on Wednesday.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has openly threatened the U.S., warning that its involvement in a conflict with Iran could backfire severely.
“The U.S. will engage in this matter to its own detriment. The damage it sustains will far exceed any harm that could befall Iran,” he commented in a social media post.
Khamenei also suggested that it was already suspected the U.S. played a role in actions taken by Israel, and growing suspicions are emerging daily.
As Israel’s conflict with Iran reaches its seventh day, Operation Raizinglion has prompted Iran to launch missile strikes in retaliation against Israel.
