Trump Pressures Netanyahu to Apologize to Qatar for Attacking Hamas Militants

President Donald Trump reportedly pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into apologizing to Qatar’s prime minister following an Israeli airstrike that targeted Hamas leaders in Doha last month.

This unusual apology might signal that negotiations are underway to conclude the conflict in Gaza. It’s quite likely that Israel wouldn’t have issued an apology without receiving something in return.

The airstrikes by Israel were a response to Hamas claiming responsibility for additional attacks within Israel. The wealthy leaders of Hamas reside comfortably in Doha, directing attacks while Palestinians bear the brunt of the violence in Gaza.

While Israel aimed to eliminate a key Hamas leader, the operation resulted in the deaths of lower-ranking officials and a Qatari guard. It seems Qatar may have cooperated by turning over some Hamas leaders after being alerted by the US.

Reports indicate that:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally apologized to Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jasim al Thani for the Israeli action that took place on September 9th.

According to Channel 12, Netanyahu spoke with al Thani, connected through a call facilitated by US President Donald Trump, who was also part of the conversation.

Foreign diplomats familiar with the situation have corroborated that Netanyahu issued the apology following the strike that resulted in both Qatari guards and several Hamas members’ deaths.

This isn’t the first time such apologies have been made; back in 2013, Netanyahu apologized to Turkey for intercepting the Mavi Marmara ship, which was filled with armed Hamas supporters. Yet, violence persisted afterwards.

Apologies of this nature are uncommon in diplomacy and are rarely viewed as genuine acknowledgments of mistakes. In the past, US mediation has played a role in improving relations between Israel and Turkey.
