Trump promises a federal ban on wind and solar projects as energy costs rise

On Tuesday, President Trump announced his administration’s strong opposition to renewable energy, aiming to halt new wind and solar projects, while warning that electricity prices in the U.S. could soar at twice the inflation rate.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “States relying on solar for windmills and power are seeing record-breaking increases in electricity and energy costs. Century fraud!”

He expressed his disapproval, saying, “We do not approve of wind or farmers destroying the sun. The days of stupidity have ended in America!!!”

This bold statement coincides with significant increases in electricity prices affecting American households. Currently, the prices have surged between 5% and 9%, with some regions experiencing drastic hikes.

For instance, residents in Maine have encountered a staggering 36.3% rise in their bills, while Connecticut and Utah have seen increases of 18.4% and 15.2%, respectively.

The Energy Information Administration predicts that electricity prices will climb by 13% from 2022 to 2025, marking the fastest increase in decades. By 2025, the average American household’s annual electricity bill is projected to rise by about $219, totaling around $1,900 a year.

A notable factor driving these rising costs is the increased demand for electricity from AI and data centers, compounded by higher grid infrastructure expenses. The uptick in natural gas prices, pivotal for electricity generation, adds even more stress to these rising fees.

Trump’s stance on curbing renewable energy has already had significant repercussions for the industry. On July 4th, he enacted “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which effectively eliminated the popular 30% federal solar tax credit for homeowners.

This new law stipulates that Americans must complete the installation of residential solar systems within months; otherwise, they could miss out on valuable tax credits. Additionally, Trump’s administration froze $7 billion in solar programs initiated during the Biden era, aimed at increasing access to solar power for low-income households.

He further criticized new wind and solar projects on federal lands. Offshore wind leases received particular backlash.

In August, the Trump administration amplified its assault on renewable energy by extending and increasing tariffs on wind turbines and their components. Currently, a hefty 50% tariff rate is imposed on 407 new categories of wind turbine products.

New stringent permit requirements for wind farms have led to delays, permit freezes, and outright cancellations of projects. Notable examples include the cancelation of the La Validge Wind Project in Idaho and the Atlantic Shores development in New Jersey, despite prior approvals.

Trump has consistently labeled wind and solar as “expensive” and “unreliable,” asserting that government subsidies only burden taxpayers and escalate energy costs. However, advocates within the renewable energy sector caution that these policy shifts could jeopardize thousands of jobs and impede the growth of clean energy as demand rises from data centers, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence.
