Trump’s Warning to California Over Transgender Athletes
President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a significant fine on California, criticizing the state’s decision to allow transgender women to compete in female sports. Recently, he took to social media, stating that biological male athletes have achieved victories that he predicted would happen, despite warnings from Governor Gavin Newsom. He wrote, “The biological men have won a big victory… and will be subject to a massive fine!”
The California Attorney General’s office replied, expressing deep concern regarding Trump’s threats to schools in the state. They are committed to defending California laws that protect the rights of all students, including those who are transgender, and are closely observing the situation.
This post came shortly after transgender athlete AB Hernandez secured first place in both the high jump and triple jump at the state championships, alongside a second-place finish in the long jump. Following these events, Trump warned Newsom that federal funds could be cut if transgender athletes participate in women’s track and field championships.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) then modified its rules, allowing female athletes who placed behind transgender competitors to receive recognition for their achievements. This meant that Hernandez had to share podium space with another female athlete who came in just after her.
In the wake of this, the Department of Justice launched a federal probe into possible Title IX violations concerning California’s policies on transgender participation in women’s sports. This follows an ongoing investigation by the state’s education department that commenced back in February.
Recent polling indicates that many Californians do not support allowing biological male athletes to compete in women’s sports. For instance, a survey showed that over 70% of parents of school-aged children in California agree that trans athletes should compete according to the gender assigned at birth. Even Governor Newsom remarked in a podcast that he believes allowing trans women to compete in women’s events is “deeply unfair.”
