Trump rates the economy as 'A plus plus plus plus' amid worries about affordability

Trump’s Economic Outlook amid Rising Voter Concerns

President Trump has asserted that the U.S. economy is thriving under his leadership, claiming it deserves an “A-plus-plus” despite what he calls a “chaos” left by the Biden administration. In a recent interview, he expressed, “I inherited confusion,” pointing to high prices when he took office and stating, “Look at energy…it’s down incredibly.” He believes that the efforts made during his tenure have led to significant drops in prices.

The recent victories by the Democratic Party in various elections have sparked some nervousness among Republicans. They view this as an opportunity to refine their messaging on the economy. Democrats have been campaigning on affordability, arguing that a vote for them is a rejection of Trump’s policies, especially given the continuing rise in living costs affecting many Americans.

As Trump reflects on the current economic challenges, his administration is increasingly placing blame on Biden’s policies. During the busy holiday shopping season, economic anxiety continues to grip consumers. “Ending Joe Biden’s inflation and affordability crisis was a first-day priority for President Trump,” noted White House Press Secretary Khush Desai, emphasizing the administration’s recent achievements, like lowering inflation and securing drug pricing agreements.

However, voters still express significant concern about their economic situation, with a recent poll indicating that 76% view the economy negatively—a notable increase from previous months. Many voters associate their financial struggles more with Trump’s policies than Biden’s tenure. Andrew Bates, a former Biden spokesperson, pointed out that the current issues stem largely from decisions made by the Trump administration, critiquing the tax breaks given to wealthy individuals.

In contrast, the White House maintains that the economic crisis is primarily a result of Biden’s leadership. Desai stated, “Joe Biden has given the American people an economic crisis that will last a generation,” highlighting Trump’s ongoing efforts to tackle these challenges, including initiatives aimed at reducing costs for Americans.

During his Politico interview, Trump reiterated his positive view of the economy, declaring it an “A-plus.” When asked for a specific grade, he humorously insisted, “That’s a plus,” and then added, “plus plus plus plus plus plus.” Despite the numbers suggesting rising discontent among voters, Trump continues to frame the narrative around Democrats causing the affordability crisis.

As he gears up for a visit to Pennsylvania—a pivotal state for his 2024 campaign—Trump plans to emphasize his administration’s economic accomplishments, hoping to quell the fears voters have about their finances.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt hinted at the upcoming speech, expressing anticipation for Trump to articulate his economic successes and counter the criticisms directed at his policies. She stated, “President Trump inherited from the Biden administration the worst inflation crisis in modern American history.”
