Trump and Petro: A Surprising Interaction Amid Protests
On Wednesday night, President Donald Trump revealed that he had met with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a figure he previously labeled as a radical Marxist, during an anti-Trump protest organized by Petro in Bogotá. This unexpected encounter happened as Petro addressed the crowd, acknowledging that he altered his originally more combative speech to adopt a more diplomatic tone at Trump’s behest.
Petro, who has a controversial history as a member of the M-19 guerrilla group, is the first left-wing leader Colombia has ever had. His administration has often strained relations with the U.S., traditionally friendly, by supporting groups such as Hamas and Venezuela’s government. Moreover, Petro has been vocal about legalizing cocaine. Trump has accused him of direct involvement in cocaine production and trafficking, and recently cautioned Petro to “watch his ass” following the arrest of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
However, the tone of Trump and Petro shifted notably during their communication. On his platform Truth Social, Trump described their interaction as “a great honor,” mentioning that Petro called him to discuss issues related to drugs and various disagreements.
“I had the great honor of speaking with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. He called to explain the drug situation and other disagreements we’ve had,” Trump stated, expressing appreciation for the call and optimism about a future meeting.
Trump also mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would assist in scheduling Petro’s visit to the White House before the end of his term in August.
During the anti-Trump rally that Petro was hosting, he acknowledged the call by sharing a photo of himself on the phone with Trump, although he appeared somewhat discontented in the image. Following this, Petro posted on Twitter, illustrating a conversation where he claimed he spent significant time trying to persuade Trump to invest in renewable energy.
In his message, Petro expressed his views on the potential for clean energy in South America and warned against reliance on oil, suggesting it could lead to dire global consequences. “World peace will be in real jeopardy, and we will be heading towards irreversible climate collapse,” he stated.
Afterward, Petro addressed the rally, admitting he had to adjust his planned speech. “Today I brought a speech, but I have to give it again. It’s not easy,” he explained to attendees. He articulated concerns that harm to him could pull the Colombian people into a conflict resembling past national struggles.
Interestingly, Petro has faced accusations from his ministers regarding potential substance abuse issues, echoing some of Trump’s previous allegations about drug trafficking being linked to him. “I’m not a soldier, but I know about war and covert operations,” Petro remarked, reflecting on his history with arms and his desire for peace.
Despite Petro’s efforts to maintain a conciliatory stance, the atmosphere was reminiscent of days before when he had made aggressive comments on social media that evoked threats from certain supporters. His history with the M-19, a group linked to historical violence, adds layers to his complicated political narrative.
As discussions about potential consequences for Petro’s administration arise, Trump has suggested that Petro could face legal scrutiny following Maduro’s extradition. “He’s got a cocaine factory,” Trump reiterated, insisting that Petro remains linked to cocaine production and must be cautious.
