Edinburgh, Scotland – Trump Targets Russia with New Deadline
US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has given Russian President Vladimir Putin a revised timeline of 10 to 12 days to cease hostilities in Ukraine. This new deadline is a significant reduction from the 50-day ultimatum he previously set for Russian leaders a couple of weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Russia launched more than 300 drones along with several cruise and ballistic missiles in overnight attacks, and the Ukrainian Air Force is facing challenges as it strives to counter the artillery fire directed at Ukrainian cities. Attempts at peace negotiations led by the US have not gained much traction recently.
On July 14, Trump stated that he would enforce “serious tariffs” on Russia unless a peace agreement could be reached by early September. With his recent remarks, the timeline for potential diplomatic talks seems to be focused around the dates of August 7th to 9th.
The proposed plan may involve sanctions and secondary tariffs aimed at Russian trading partners, with an official announcement anticipated later on Monday or Tuesday. “There’s no reason to wait,” Trump remarked concerning the tight timeline, adding, “We’re not making progress.”
During his visit to Scotland, Trump emphasized the necessity of reaching an agreement, lamenting that “too many people are dying.”
As of now, there has been no response from Russia regarding Trump’s remarks.
Trump has consistently criticized Putin for expressing a desire to end the conflict while simultaneously continuing attacks on Ukrainian civilians. “That’s not the way to do that,” he stated, expressing his disappointment in Putin.
When pressed about the possibility of meeting with Russian leaders, Trump replied, “I’m not particularly interested in talking anymore.”
Despite his strong words, Trump also conveyed a reluctance to impose harsh penalties on the Kremlin, emphasizing his affection for the Russian people. “I don’t want to do that to Russia,” he mentioned, but acknowledged the human cost affecting both Russians and Ukrainians in the ongoing war.
Ukraine has been urging Western nations to establish a firmer stance against Putin. Andri Yermack, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, expressed gratitude to Trump for revising the deadline.
“Putin understands only strength – it needs to be communicated clearly,” Yermak told Telegram, noting that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shares his sentiments.
In recent attacks, Russian drones damaged windows of a high-rise building in Kiev’s Danitsky district, injuring eight people, including a young girl. Simultaneously, a fire erupted in Klopivnitsky, central Ukraine, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The principal target of the attacks appeared to be Starkostianniv in the Kumernitsky region, although local authorities reported no significant damage or casualties. The western area of Ukraine, which is distanced from active conflict zones, hosts crucial airfields and military supply depots.
The Russian Ministry of Defense declared that their forces conducted a nighttime strike with long-range air weaponry, hitting an air force base in Ukraine and damaging a warehouse containing ammunition and drone production components.
