Trump Relocates Nuclear Submarines Amid Tensions with Russia
President Donald Trump has announced plans to relocate two nuclear submarines in response to escalating tensions with Russia, particularly after new tariffs were implemented on several countries.
On Monday, Trump set a new ultimatum for Russia regarding its conflict with Ukraine. This announcement was met with criticism from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who labeled it as “another step into war.”
In a somewhat rare move, Trump informed the public on Friday about the submarine relocation, which aims to better address the rising tensions between the United States and Russia.
Tariff Changes
Additionally, on Thursday, Trump signed several executive orders increasing tariffs on various countries, including raising Canada’s tariff rates from 25% to 35%. According to the Trump administration, these changes were made due to the influx of fentanyl and other illegal drugs originating from Canada. However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney challenged this assertion, noting that Canada is responsible for only about 1% of fentanyl imports and is actively working to reduce those numbers.
Trump also announced a hike in Brazil’s tariff rate to 50%. Conversely, there was a trade deal reached with South Korea, reducing tariffs from 25% to 15%. Furthermore, talks to extend trade discussions with Mexico for another 90 days were confirmed.
Veterans Housing Act
On another front, Trump signed the VA Mortgage Program Reform Act on Wednesday. This legislation is designed to help prevent veterans from losing their homes due to foreclosure. It introduces a new partial claims program that allows veterans behind on mortgage payments to access temporary, interest-free loans to assist them in catching up financially.
Trump remarked, “The law provides desperately needed relief to veterans and families who have fallen behind on mortgages. We’re going to do everything possible to ensure our veterans are treated with respect.” He estimated this program could assist around 3.7 million veterans.
