Trump Requests Pardon for Netanyahu
On Wednesday morning, former President Donald Trump formally reached out to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, asking him to consider pardoning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently undergoing trial on charges related to corruption and fraud.
In a letter released by Herzog’s office, Trump praised Netanyahu as a “terrible and decisive” leader who guided Israel during a war and spearheaded an “era of peace.” He emphasized that the Prime Minister “stands tall for Israel” despite facing significant challenges and that distractions from his leadership shouldn’t be tolerated.
Trump expressed respect for the autonomy of Israel’s judicial system but characterized the charges against Netanyahu as “a political and unwarranted prosecution.”
Netanyahu is facing accusations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate corruption cases. This trial, which began in 2020, is notable as it’s the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has appeared as a criminal defendant.
Trump concluded his letter calling for an end to Netanyahu’s legal struggles, stating, “It’s time to pardon Bibi and end his legal actions once and for all, allowing him to unite Israel.”
Herzog, however, did not take a definitive stance on the matter. His office clarified that any request for a presidential pardon must go through the appropriate channels, including a formal application from the individual seeking the pardon. Herzog expressed his respect for Trump and acknowledged the crucial support Trump has provided to Israel, including efforts to repatriate hostages from Gaza.
Earlier, Trump had mentioned the pardon request during a speech in the Israeli parliament, adding more visibility to an issue that is gaining attention.
