In a recent interview with Laura Ingraham, President Donald Trump addressed the backlash regarding the renovation plans for the White House initiated by former first lady Michelle Obama. He emphasized that the new ballroom to replace the East Wing will reportedly be “one of the largest” globally.
Trump mentioned, “The East Wing is funded by private donors. This is a $250 million to $300 million project. It’s going to be the most stunning building anywhere.” He noted that the existing space can hold just 79 people, which, he argued, is insufficient for significant events. Citing a recent event, he described a scenario where a tent had to be pitched on the lawn, which turned into quite the mess, saying, “If it rained, you were sitting in 6 inches of water. It was a disaster.”
His comments came after Michelle Obama criticized the demolition of the East Tower, which some critics like Rep. Eric Swalwell and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have condemned. Obama labeled the decision “insulting,” pointing out that the East Wing serves as a central hub for a first lady’s work.
She articulated, “Denigrating it, destroying it, pretending it doesn’t matter reflects how you view that role.” She also made note of the lack of formal guidance for first ladies in her recent television appearances, adding, “We have almost no staff. We don’t even have a building now.”
In response to the harsh criticism regarding the East Tower, Trump acknowledged its historical value but also highlighted that it had undergone numerous renovations prior. “That building was renovated 20 times, and it was in bad shape,” he stated, insisting that they did not want to compromise the new ballroom’s quality by keeping an outdated section of the structure.
This new development, which spans 90,000 square feet, aims to provide the White House with a formal ballroom for the first time and is designed to align with the classic aesthetic of the White House.
