Trump revives conflict with Newsom regarding California FireAid money

Trump Questions Fireaid Donations

Former President Trump seems to have reignited his dispute with California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding the funds raised from California’s Fireaid concert. He claimed that a $100 million donation, meant for Los Angeles residents affected by a fire in January, is reportedly “missing.”

“Fireaid is a complete disaster. It seems like a scam orchestrated by another Democrat. $100 million is unaccounted for, and it should be going to the victims in Los Angeles,” he stated. “I mentioned this on a Friday night,” he added, hinting at a broader issue.

“What a difference that made,” he remarked, possibly suggesting a significant impact on those affected.

The Fireaid concert, a one-night event, was intended to assist residents who lost their homes in a severe wildfire in Los Angeles earlier this year. The lineup included artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, and featured stories from the victims of the Palisade and Altadena fires.

However, there are questions surrounding how the funds are managed.

Fireaid reportedly raised around $100 million so far, according to details on the event’s site.

In a statement given to a Fox affiliate, the organization clarified, “We had no ability to pay individuals directly, and that was never a plan. We collaborate with reputable local nonprofits to assist communities in need.”

Actor Miles Terror, attending the event, emphasized, “All the money raised will be sent directly to those who need it, both now and in the future.”

Trump took a jab at Newsom, indicating that he had “dismissed him, but now he’s free.”

“All federal housing permits have also been approved, and the city is several years behind,” he added. “It’s crucial that the victims of the fire get the approval to rebuild—do it now!”

Trump has had ongoing conflicts with Newsom since he began his second term, often targeting the governor’s handling of wildfires in Los Angeles County. He criticized Newsom for not facilitating the declaration that would allow more water to flow through the state to help prevent such disasters.

Recently, they have also clashed over Trump’s immigration policies, which have sparked significant protests throughout California and beyond.

Representative Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) is now calling for an investigation into how the funds for wildfire victims have been distributed.

“We want people to know there was a thorough process behind this. Our main focus has always been on what’s best for the fire survivors,” he noted, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The damage caused by the wildfire is estimated to exceed $50 billion.
