Trump: SAVE Act 'Even More Critical' Following SCOTUS Decision on Mail-In Ballots

Trump Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on Mail-in Ballots

President Donald Trump has emphasized the significance of the SAVE America Act following a Supreme Court decision that permits states to count mail-in ballots received after Election Day, asserting that this does not contravene federal law.

After Trump signed an executive order, town hall reporter Cameron Arcand inquired about the president’s views on the Supreme Court’s ruling and the future of the SAVE Act. Trump characterized the ruling as “detrimental to honest elections,” suggesting it might facilitate illegal voting.

Arcand asked, “Mr. President, what do you think about today’s Supreme Court decision regarding mail-in voting? What’s next for the SAVE Act in light of today’s decision?” Trump replied, “The SAVE Act is even more important because of the vote-by-mail ruling — which, somewhat surprisingly, gave people more time to vote illegally. You must be a citizen of our country; you must show that you are a citizen, which is called citizenship.” He added, “There will be no photo voter ID and no mail-in ballots, except for military personnel, the disabled, sick, or those who are away on vacation. We intend to make the process straightforward to ensure an honest election.”

Trump further mentioned, “I think this ruling, which so many have anticipated, is extremely detrimental to honest elections. But it is what it is.”

According to John Binder from Breitbart News, the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision allows states to accept mail-in ballots that are sent on or before Election Day, even if they arrive after.

Binder noted that Justice Amy Coney Barrett authored the majority opinion, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The court clarified, “Two principles are important here: First, post-election receipts, by themselves, do not violate the Election Day statute.”

Trump’s comments regarding the heightened importance of the SAVE America Act followed closely after his announcement to postpone the signing ceremony for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act.
