Trump says GOP always bend the knee: NYT

Former President Trump boasts overwhelming control over the Republican Party and points to his ability to rally support even from stiff resistance within the party, according to a new report Thursday in the New York Times.

President Trump: “They always bend the knee'' talked about gaining support The Times reported Wednesday that House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota), who is running for president, said the statement was made by someone who had spoken to President Trump.

On Wednesday, Emmer became the last member of the House Republican leadership to publicly support Trump. Emmer will be joined by Speaker Mike Johnson (Louisiana), House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (Louisiana), House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (New York), and National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Richard Hudson (North Carolina). join.

Emmer's support is significant, especially since he is the only Republican leader who did not vote against certification of the 2020 election results. His support would strengthen Trump's already overwhelming lead.

The endorsement comes during a three-week period in which the House has been leaderless and in which House Republicans have repeatedly failed to find a replacement for ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). This comes in response to the government's decision to block Mr. Emmer's appointment as chairman.

After Emmer was selected as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House, Trump used his Truth social platform to single-handedly destroy Emmer's chances. President Trump called Emmer a “globalist RINO” and said voting for him “would be a tragic mistake.” Support for Mr Emmer's bid then plummeted.

The Hill has asked representatives for Trump and Emmer to respond to the Times report.
