Trump Says He Will Reduce George Santos's Prison Sentence

Trump Commutes Sentence of George Santos

On Friday, President Trump announced that he would commute the sentence of George Santos, a former Republican Congressman from New York.

Santos had pleaded guilty in April to 23 charges involving wire fraud and identity theft, resulting in a sentence of 87 months in prison. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Santos as “a thug in some ways,” but argued that many others who have committed crimes don’t deserve lengthy sentences either.

Trump mentioned that he thought about Santos while discussing Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. Blumenthal had claimed to be a Vietnam veteran, portraying himself heroically, but, according to Trump, he was actually a fraud. “This is far worse than what George Santos did,” Trump wrote. “At least Santos had the courage to vote Republican! He’s been in solitary confinement and suffered abuses in prison. That’s why I’ve signed a commutation that will set him free immediately. Good luck, George!”

Santos served in Congress for nearly a year before being expelled in December 2021 for breaking federal laws, with further misconduct noted in a House Ethics Committee report from November 2023.

In an interview before starting his sentence in July, Santos expressed concern for his safety in prison. “I don’t know if I’ll survive. It’s a violent facility. I can’t fight,” he shared, highlighting worries about being a gay man in that environment. “It’s sad. I have a family.”

Shortly after this interview, Santos began his prison term. He later took to social media, reflecting on his journey from Congress to the media spotlight, calling it a chaotic experience. “To my supporters: You made this rowdy political cabaret worthwhile. To my critics: Thank you for the freedom of the press. A legend never truly leaves,” he concluded.
