President-elect Donald Trump told a news conference Monday in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, that he would consider pardoning New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted on federal corruption charges in September.
The indictment alleges that Adams provided favors to Turkey in exchange for campaign contributions, which were then used to obtain matching campaign contributions to the city. He also claimed that he received benefits such as hotel upgrades.
Adams denies the charges, but some court observers say so. explained They are flimsy and even suggest they may be the result of an overly aggressive and politically motivated New York federal prosecutor's office.
Asked if he would consider pardoning Adams, President Trump replied, “Yes, I will.” He explained that the charges against Adams were related to “being upgraded on a plane many years ago,” adding, “I think everyone here was upgraded.”
Trump said he believed Adams was treated unfairly after he “went against what was going on” with President Joe Biden's border policies, which brought many illegal immigrants to New York City.
Last week, Adams met with Tom Homan, President-elect Trump's pick to head the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Bureau. He expressed his willingness to work with President Trump to address the ongoing immigration crisis in the United States.
President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter earlier this month and last week added 39 more pardons and 1,499 commutations, some of them for criminals who committed very serious crimes. .
