Republican former President Donald Trump said there had been an alleged plot to assassinate him by the Iranian government and that security had been stepped up as a result.
President Trump made the revelation on his social media accounts on Tuesday.
“Attacking a former president is a death wish for the attacker!”
“Iran poses a great threat to my life. The entire US military is watching and waiting. Iran has already tried and it didn't work, but they will try again,” he wrote.
“It's not a good situation for anybody,” he added. “I'm surrounded by more men, more guns and more weapons than I've ever seen in my life.”
He further thanked the assembly for passing the motion to strengthen his security without any dissenting votes.
“It's good to see Republicans and Democrats united on something. Attacking a former President is a death wish for the attacker!” he added.
The Trump campaign also statement The campaign said the former president had been briefed by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence about threats intended to “destabilize and sow chaos in the United States,” and that these threats had “elevated over the past few months.”
There is no evidence of Iranian involvement in either of the two assassination attempts on President Trump.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina used the revelations to urge action against the Iranian regime.
“In the eyes of a bipartisan majority of the United States, Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism.” said “President Biden and Vice President Harris are doing nothing about this outrage. I am acting because if we do not act now, this will become the norm that is antithetical to American democracy,” Graham said on social media.
