Trump says slashing grocery prices will be 'very hard'

President-elect Trump said it would be “very difficult” to lower food prices now that they are rising, but predicted they would go down in the future.

in wide range of interviews In an interview with Time magazine, Trump struck a more measured tone than during his campaign.

But when asked if his presidency would be a failure if food prices don't come down, Trump said, “I don't think so.”

“Look, they got them up. We're going to take them down. It's hard to bring down something once it's up. You know, it's very hard. But I think we'll do it.” I think that energy is going to bring them down. I think a better supply chain will bring them down,” Trump said, noting that the supply chain “is still broken.”

Trump frequently blamed the Biden administration for soaring food prices during the 2024 campaign, slamming steep price hikes on items like bacon, cereal and crackers during the campaign.

“We're going to beat them,” President Trump told shoppers during a visit to a Pennsylvania grocery store in September.

In a speech in North Carolina in August, Trump told voters, “From the day I take the oath of office, we will rapidly lower prices and make America affordable again.”

“Prices are going to go down. We'll just have to wait and see,” he continued, “and they're going to go down, and they're going to go down fast. It's not just insurance, it's everything.”
