Trump seen discussing possible Putin peace agreement with Macron

Trump’s Remarks on Peace Negotiations with Putin

During a recent event, President Donald Trump was caught on a hot mic speaking to French President Emmanuel Macron about his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin is interested in reaching a peace deal, presumably to benefit Trump himself. “He wants to make a deal. He wants to make a deal for me, do you understand that?” Trump reportedly said just before a meeting with European leaders.

On that same day, top European officials gathered at the White House, where Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This meeting was significant as it aimed to find ways to mediate a peace settlement amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has continued since early 2022.

After his discussions with Zelensky, Trump spoke with the European leaders, addressing the security guarantees for Ukraine, which he stated would be coordinated with the United States and backed by various European nations.

European leaders at the meeting included Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Milley.

Macron later spoke with NBC News and was asked about Trump’s comments. “What went through your mind when he told you that?” NBC’s Kristen Welker inquired. Macron interpreted the exchange as a hopeful sign, emphasizing that it could indicate a potential end to the war: “If there’s a deal that leads to lasting peace, it could be great news for everyone involved,” he remarked.

Trump’s team has characterized him as the only leader capable of bringing Putin back to the negotiating table. A White House spokesman pointed out that European leaders are recognizing the progress towards peace under Trump’s leadership, especially in light of perceived failures from previous administrations.

On a morning talk show, Trump reiterated his commitment to pursuing peace negotiations, suggesting a land exchange deal as part of the process before Putin and Zelensky meet one-on-one. He noted, perhaps with a hint of surprise, that “Maybe they’re doing a little better than I thought. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have set up two meetings.”

Trump has also stated that he won’t include NATO recognition in the discussions, even though other European nations have agreed to offer NATO-like protections to Ukraine.

After a recent meeting in Alaska with Putin—although not resulting in a peace agreement—it seems that there’s a concerted effort to delve deeper into peace negotiations, something Trump emphasized during his campaign. “At the conclusion of the White House meeting, I called Putin to arrange the next steps between him and Zelensky,” he posted on social media, describing the day as an important milestone in the protracted conflict.
