Trump’s Remarks on Dancing in Public

During a recent speech to Republican lawmakers, President Trump shared that first lady Melania Trump does not appreciate public dancing, labeling it as “unpresidential.” He recounted, “My wife isn’t a fan of this,” while addressing House Republicans at the Kennedy Center.

He continued, “She’s quite classy, don’t you think? She said, ‘That’s very unpresidential.’ I replied, ‘But I’m the president… Everyone wants me to dance.'” Trump then humorously quoted Melania, saying, “Darling, that’s not presidential.”

Dancing has become a staple at his 2024 campaign rallies, often kicked off or wrapped up with the Village People’s “YMCA” and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” Trump’s unique dance style typically sees him making fists and swinging his arms while pointing at crowd members.

Trump had previously mentioned Melania’s dislike for his rally dancing, recalling a 2023 gathering in Iowa where she told him, “Darling, I love you, but that’s not presidential. Don’t dance off stage. It just isn’t presidential.”

In his recent address, he remarked that Melania advised against him dancing solo in political contexts, citing President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a standard for presidential conduct. He joked, “Can you picture FDR dancing?” He quickly added, “Maybe there’s some history she doesn’t know about because he was quite the sophisticated guy, even as a Democrat.”

On another note, Trump mentioned how Melania believes the crowd’s cheers for his dancing might be more about politeness than enjoyment. “She said, ‘They don’t like it. They’re just being nice to you,'” he recalled. Yet, he disagreed, asserting that his supporters genuinely enjoy the dancing vibe at rallies.

As Trump pulled the conversation in a slightly different direction, he began discussing a competition between biological males and females while imitating a weightlifter, reinforcing that he doesn’t support Melania dancing or mimicking such acts during political events.

On a more serious note, Trump addressed lawmakers after the recent U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy and are currently detained in a Brooklyn jail.

Despite the serious backdrop, the focus of Trump’s speech remained on the party’s strategy for the upcoming midterm elections. He wrapped up his time on stage with energetic applause and another round of dancing to “YMCA.”
