Trump Shares Reason for Secret Service Bringing Him Back to White House After Assassination Attempt

Trump Discusses Secret Service Protocol After Gunman Incident

During an interview on “Sunday Briefing,” President Donald Trump explained why the Secret Service required him to return to the White House following a foiled threat against his administration on Saturday night.

Initially, Trump announced on Truth Social that he would return to the stage at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, indicating that the event would proceed despite the situation. However, after 19 minutes, he revealed via a separate post that he was instead heading back to the White House, following law enforcement’s instructions to leave “in accordance with decorum.” He later elaborated on his decision to Jackie Heinrich, a co-host of the show and a board member of the White House Correspondents Association, the organization behind the dinner.

Heinrich expressed her surprise at Trump’s immediate reaction post-incident, recalling their phone conversation where she questioned if he felt safe to continue after the Secret Service assessed the scene.

Trump responded, “I hated this guy. He was sick, he was bad. I hated those guys who changed the course of our country… For what? For one madman?” He conveyed a desire to continue with the event but acknowledged that they had to follow safety protocols.

Trump has faced two assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign. He recounted an incident from July 13 when a gunman fired during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing his ear, and how a Secret Service agent intercepted a potential threat while he was golfing in Florida.

“When the door opened, that room was sealed. But once it opened, people rushed in, and it became chaotic. I thought there could have been more than one person involved,” he stated.

Reflecting on the night, Trump mentioned he wished to continue the event despite the late hour but ultimately felt they made the right choice in returning to the White House. He emphasized the importance of addressing the public and holding a press conference afterwards to clarify the events that unfolded.
