A GoFundMe effort has raised more than $1 million for the family of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who died Saturday while trying to protect his family from bullets aimed at former President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Jason Babb, owner of 3 Fit Six Gym in Cabot, organized the fundraiser for Comperatore’s daughter, Allison, who frequents the gym.

“She’s a great customer of mine,” Babb said. He told WTAE.

“Saturday night, our friend and family member Allison lost her father in a senseless and tragic act at the Trump rally in Butler,” Babb wrote for the fundraiser. “Allison has been an athlete with us since the beginning and she is a huge part of our community…If you are able to support her and her family during this time, we will have a donation area set up in the gym and please also take a moment to sign the card at the desk.”

The slain firefighter’s sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, wrote in a Facebook post that Comperatore “was a hero who protected his daughters.”

In a Facebook post, Allison described her father as “the best dad a girl could ask for” and said he “died as a real-life superhero.”

“He threw me and my mother to the ground…” [and] “I shielded myself from the bullets that were flying towards us,” she wrote on Facebook.

Babb initially hoped to raise just $7,000 for the Comperatore family, but as of Tuesday morning, more than $1.114 million had been donated by more than 20,000 supporters.

“And now I’m in the middle of it all. I’m going to do everything I can to help her. And this is all about that family,” Babb told WTAE.
