Trump shooting task force says DHS, Secret Service haven’t produced docs on golf course incident

The House Select Committee investigating President-elect Trump's assassination attempt released its final report Tuesday, citing “existing conditions and leadership failures” that led to a deadly campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July. ” was detailed.

Although the bipartisan commission was provided with sufficient information about the shooting, the report concluded that it was a second attempt on Trump's life, this one at a Palm Beach golf course in September. indicated that a request for documents regarding the matter was seemingly blocked.

“The Special Committee notes that as of the date of publication of this report, [the Department of Homeland Security], [U.S. Secret Service]FBI, and [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] “We have not produced any documents in response to the Special Committee's request regarding the preparations, events, and response to the second assassination attempt on September 15,” the report said.

Lawmakers found “significant vulnerabilities” in the site's security. The report said Secret Service agents identified the perimeter of the golf course as a “position of advantage for a potential sniper.”

The report also calls on the Secret Service to review its rules regarding golf courses, which would be a major overhaul of the policy given Trump and other presidents' historic love of golf.

Other recommendations in the 180-page report include asking Congress to consider removing the Secret Service from DHS jurisdiction.

“The current structure has the potential to weaken the USSS, a small but critically important agency, in advocating for budget and other priorities within a much larger organization,” the report said. There is.

“Failure in [Butler, Pennsylvania] This is far from the first major USSS failure in recent history, and it is natural to question whether the USSS should continue to be housed within DHS. ”

The Secret Service was under the jurisdiction of the Treasury Department until 2003, when it was transferred to the newly created DHS, but the task force advocated for it to become a completely independent agency.

The report states, “Former leaders of the USSS believe that a new examination of whether the USSS could benefit from its status as an independent agency, allowing it more freedom to make budget requests and advocate for itself, “This will be a healthy discussion to have with Congress.”

The task force also recommended conserving resources by limiting the number of people who receive Secret Service protection.

“The number of protected individuals has expanded significantly, and resource demands become even more burdensome during longer and more intensive modern presidential campaign periods,” the report states.

Secret Service protection of foreign officials is particularly strained on resources during the United Nations General Assembly, the report said. It will take place in September, the same month that President Trump's second attempt on his life took place.

“As a result, Congress, the Department of Homeland Security, and the USSS will jointly consider the protective role the USSS plays vis-à-vis foreign leaders and focus on the USSS' primary mission of protecting the President and other leaders. “Critical U.S. leaders should consider whether such obligations can be transferred or abolished,” the report said.

The House unanimously voted to create the committee earlier this year. The Secret Service came under intense scrutiny after a 20-year-old gunman opened fire on President Trump's July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, from just outside the rally.

Trump and two others were injured, and one attendee died.
