Trump Reduces Deadline for Putin to Resolve Ukraine Conflict
President Donald Trump has announced a significant reduction in the deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to conclude the war in Ukraine, now set at just 10 to 12 days from Monday. This comes after Trump initially granted Putin a 50-day period.
On July 14, Trump had declared that Putin would have 50 days to cease the invasion, warning of serious sanctions should he fail to comply.
“I’m going to make a new deadline, of about 10, 10 or 12 days from today,” Trump said during remarks in Scotland. “There’s no reason for waiting. It was 50 days. I wanted to be generous, but we just don’t see any progress being made.”
Expressing frustration, Trump stated, “I’m not so interested in talking anymore. He talks – we have such nice conversations, such respectful and nice conversations. And then, people die the following night.”
Trump elaborated, “I would have said five times we would have had a deal. I’ve spoken to President Putin a lot. And then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever. You have bodies lying all over the street.”
In a tweet, political commentator Eric Daugherty noted, “🚨 JUST IN: President Trump is DONE with Putin. He just said he’s lowering the initial 50-day deadline for sanctions on them to 10 days…”
Trump shared his disappointment with Putin in an interview, stating, “We’ve had great conversations, but it hasn’t been followed up with… just some very bad things have happened. Very, very bad things have happened after we’ve had conversations. And I’d leave and I’d say, ‘Well, I really thought we had it settled’ three or four times.”
In military updates, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched a total of 324 Shahed-type suicide drones, along with 4 Kh-101 cruise missiles and 3 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aero ballistic missiles. Out of these, two cruise missiles and 15 drones managed to strike targets, although Ukraine successfully intercepted 309 of the drones and two cruise missiles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commended the effectiveness of their defenses, stating, “Our unmanned defenses delivered strong results against ‘Shaheds’ – dozens of Russian drones were shot down. Several missiles were also intercepted overnight. Unfortunately, not all of them – there were also hits.”
Zelensky further emphasized the need for support, sharing, “But we are constantly strengthening Ukraine’s air shield, and it is vital to maintain clear understanding among partners of how exactly they can help. Step by step, we are closing the funding gap for drone production, and I will be holding new talks with partners on this task later this week.”
Before Trump announced the new deadline, Zelensky had warned that a longer 50-day timeframe would result in increased casualties.
“Fifty days, for us, is just — every day is scary,” Zelensky noted earlier.
He added, “Putin has wasted President Trump’s time. I would very much like to see the United States, the Congress and the president put some pressure on this situation with sanctions, and the sooner, the faster it can be done, the better.”
Ukraine and Russia have convened for three meetings in Turkey over recent months, although these discussions have not led to a ceasefire. There were some agreements on prisoner exchanges.
- First round: at Dolmabahçe Palace, marking the first direct talks.
- Second round: at Ciragan Palace, with minimal progress on a ceasefire.
- Third round: again in Istanbul, lasting under an hour, without a ceasefire agreement but more discussion on prisoner swap terms.
As for Trump, he has yet to disclose whether he plans to impose further sanctions on Russia or increase tariffs on countries purchasing Russian energy, should Putin fail to secure a ceasefire before the new deadline approaches.
