Venezuelan Change of Leadership
For years, the people of Venezuela have faced severe hardship under the socialist regime of President Nicolás Maduro. Once a thriving nation, it has plunged into hunger, violence, and despair. Families struggle to find food; hospitals lack essential medicines, and millions have left their homes. Venezuela serves as a cautionary tale of socialism’s destructive impact.
However, that oppressive chapter may be coming to a close.
I’ve long held the belief that President Maduro should resign, and I take pride in the actions taken during the Trump-Pence administration regarding Venezuela. We rallied an unprecedented coalition of over 60 countries and achieved bipartisan support in Congress to spotlight the injustices perpetrated by this dictatorship.
We froze the regime’s financial assets to curb human rights violations while providing nearly $1 billion in aid to the Venezuelan population. In a first since September 11, 2001, we activated a version of the Mutual Defense Agreement for the Western Hemisphere to signal our commitment to Venezuela’s security and freedom.
Even though we didn’t fully realize our goal of liberating the Venezuelan people, I felt a sense of hope when the president ordered a military operation to apprehend Maduro and ensure he faced justice in the United States.
Thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership and the professionalism of our military, Maduro has been removed from power. His influence over Venezuela has ended, granting its long-suffering people a unique chance to reclaim their freedom and rebuild their country.
The United States has consistently labeled President Maduro as a dictator with no legitimate claim to authority. He manipulated elections, jailed political foes, suppressed freedom of the press, and turned government structures into corrupt entities. Trump’s robust actions deserve appreciation from anyone who values freedom, as they ended this tragic chapter of socialism.
No free individuals willingly exchange prosperity for poverty. However, President Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chávez, forced this choice upon Venezuela, dismantling free markets, seizing control of the oil sector, and suppressing private enterprise. The outcomes were both predictable and devastating—food shortages, power outages, crippling inflation, and societal collapse.
During a visit to the Venezuelan border in 2019, I witnessed the consequences of this oppression first-hand. I met a family who had fled with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their heartbreaking stories left no doubt about the cruelty of the Maduro regime.
The impacts extended beyond Venezuela, creating a refugee crisis unparalleled in modern history as millions sought safety. While many ended up in the United States, the paths taken were complex, with some seeking refuge legally and others using avenues made available by a fragmented asylum system.
At the same time, Maduro’s regime engaged in extensive drug trafficking, saturating American communities with harmful substances and destroying lives. Notably, even the current administration has recognized Maduro’s criminal activities, offering a substantial reward for his arrest on charges of narco-terrorism and corruption.
Moreover, Maduro invited adversarial nations—like Russia, Iran, Cuba, and communist China—into our hemisphere, thus transforming Venezuela into a base for hostile forces dangerously close to U.S. borders, forming a significant national security concern.
Despite criticism from some progressives and populists regarding Trump’s firm resolve to bring Maduro to justice, the Constitution grants the President broad authority as Commander-in-Chief. It’s essential for protecting our nation and enforcing the law, which includes the criminal allegations against Maduro. This is something past presidents from both parties have exercised, and to undermine such power now would leave future leaders less capable and our country more vulnerable.
Maduro must face justice for his wrongdoings—be it the corruption that hollowed out Venezuela, the oppression that stifled dissent, or the drug trafficking that has claimed American lives. Finally, justice seems within reach.
The Venezuelan populace now stands on the brink of significant change. They deserve a renewal of their freedoms, leading to a nation governed by its citizens, grounded in the understanding of fundamental liberties and committed to free markets and fair elections. Their future should embody hope, not fear.
Thanks to President Trump and our dedicated military personnel, that envisioned future is now attainable. Freedom can bloom once more in Venezuela, which would enhance the security and prosperity of the entire region, just as the United States has always strived to do.
