President Trump signed an executive order on Friday, excluding nonprofits from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) that say they are engaged in “unlawful practice subsidies.”
According to the executive order, “Individuals employed by organizations whose activities have substantial illegal purposes are not eligible for public service loan exemptions.”
PSLF is a student loan program that takes up government positions such as those working with nonprofits, along with those working with nonprofits after making ten years of payments in a row.
“Instead of alleviating the shortage of workers in the required occupation, the PSLF program mistakenly directed activist organizations to taxes, which not only serve the public interest, but actually harm national security and American values through criminal means,” the executive order reads.
This order directs limiting program eligibility for those present in nonprofit positions. The newly confirmed Education Secretary Linda McMahon will also redefine the term “public services” and exclude support for ordered-listed issues, such as violating federal immigration laws or supporting terrorism and child abuse, in a way that excludes “substantial illegal purposes.”
Trump staff said the “problem” with the loan program is something that some nonprofits consider to be “inappropriate activities, such as illegal engagement or illegal immigration, foreign terrorist organizations, or other law-breaking activities” in which they work for the organization.
“This executive order directs the Treasury and Treasury to essentially bring about changes to the public service loan exemption programme, preventing people engaged in this type of activity from benefiting from programs that are not intended to support these types of things,” the staff added.
The PSLF began in 2007 under the University's Cost Reduction and Access Act. Over one million borrowers are granted debt through the program.
The PSLF change is because borrowers have no access to applications for income-driven repayment methods as they have been temporarily removed by the Ministry of Education.
